Iloilo City has recorded its first case of African Swine Fever (ASF), a highly contagious viral disease among pigs that generally results in high mortality.
Of the 17 blood samples from hogs in Zone 5, Barangay Tacas in Jaro district, one tested positive for the deadly virus.
The tests were conducted by the Regional Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory of the Department of Agriculture (DA) in Western Visayas.
Mayor Jerry P. Treñas said quarantine measures have already been put in place within the 500-meter radius to prevent the spread of ASF.
“We are working with the barangays and we will continue to make sure that all hogs within the 500-meter radius will be depopulated and buried,” he added.
The city government “will also find ways and means to extend financial assistance to affected owners in the area.”IMT
