Sixty people in the province of Iloilo died by suicide from January to August this year, police data showed.

According to the Iloilo Police Provincial Office (IPPO), majority of the suicide victims experienced depression caused by “family problems” and “heartaches.”

Of the total number, 50 were found dead hanging and the rest took their lives by slashing their wrists, and by shooting, stubbing and drowning themselves.

The province’s Fourth District had the highest suicide cases with 18, followed by Third District, 15; Second District, 13; First District, 10; and Fifth District, 4.

Broken down per town/city, Leon and Passi City registered 5 cases each; Cabatuan, Dingle and Janiuay had 4 cases each; Banate, Carles, Lambunao and Miagao had 3 cases each; Sta. Barbara, Alimodian, Badiangan, Barotac Nuevo, Guimbal, New Lucena and San Joaquin had 2 cases each; and Anilao Duenas, Dumangas, Igbaras, Leganes, Lemery, Oton, San Enrique, Tigbauan and Zarraga had 1 case each.

From 2016 to August 2019, the IPPO recorded 179 suicide cases.Most of the victims belonged to the 9-21 age group.

Joseph Carlo Carillo, coordinator for Department of Health’s (DOH-6) adolescent health and development programs, said they have a clinic in Robinsons Place Iloilo for those who suffer from depression.

“The clinic provides free consultation,” he said.

The DOH-6 also offer phone-based counseling service for those with mental health issues.
