Two zones in Barangay Balabag in Boracay Island, Malay, Aklan are now under surgical lockdown due to the increasing number of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases.  

Malay Acting Mayor Frolibar Bautista issued on March 28 Executive Order No. 012 series of 2021 placing Zones 5 and 6 of Barangay Balabag in the island of Boracay under surgical lockdown from 12 midnight of March 28 to 12 midnight of April 10, 2021.

All the entrances and exits of Zones 5 and 6 are being manned by the Philippine National Police-Malay, augmented by the PNP Maritime, Malay Auxiliary Police, Balabag Barangay Tanod, Philippine Navy, Philippine Army, Bureau of Fire Protection, Beach Guards, and LGU Securities, as stated in the EO.

Per the report by the Local Government Unit-Malay, about 31 accommodation establishments are situated within the affected areas.

Tourists that are affected by the localized lockdown are advised to observe limited movement until provided with Quarantine Pass from the barangay.

However, incoming tourists with confirmed bookings to hotels or resorts within the Critical Zone are encouraged to transfer to other Department of Tourism-accredited accommodation establishments outside the areas affected by the surgical lockdown.

As of March 28, 2021, there are 32 active COVID-19 cases in the island, of which 25 are in Barangay Balabag, six in Barangay Manoc-manoc, and one in Barangay Yapak.

With the recent event in the island due to COVID-19, LGU-Malay is likewise conducting stringent implementation measures in prohibiting the operation of bars in Boracay Island, pursuant to Section 2, Letter F of Executive Order No. 037, series of 2020 of the Provincial Government of Aklan.

Temporarily, food parks with entertainment and live shows and bands, restaurants with live bands, and organized parties are prohibited from operating in Boracay.

The Malay government appeals for the understanding and cooperation of the tourists and residents as such are necessary initiatives in flattening the COVID-19 curve in the community.
