The 1st Northern Iloilo Tourism Summit, scheduled on March 16-17, 2020 in Carles, Iloilo, has been postponed.
Iloilo Fifth Representative Raul “Boboy” Tupas said that the postponement is “consistent with the national policies and guidelines set by the Department of Health (DOH) in order to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).”
The office of Tupas is the main proponent of the summit in partnership with the Department of Tourism (DOT-6).
Tupas said there is no definite date yet as to when the event will be moved.
The tourism summit aims to “promote activities and programs on tourism awareness, foster tourism development and encourage private sector participation”, and to “improve and strengthen coordination between and among DOT, local government units (LGUs), Congressional Office, stakeholders, and private sector.”
The northern part of Iloilo (Fifth District) is the province’s top tourist destination. It is comprised of the towns of Barotac Viejo, Ajuy, Concepcion, Sara, San Dionisio, San Rafael, Lemery, Batad, Estancia, Balasan, and Carles.
Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor Jr. issued on March 10 an executive order suspending the holding of public events involving a large number of attendees.
On March 12, the DOH upgraded its COVID-19 alert from Code Red Sublevel 1 to Sublevel 2.IMT
